AUGUST 2009:  Bethany Home Shares in “Living with Assistance” $283,500 Project Grant

Awarded by U.S. Oil Open Fund for Basic Needs & the J. J. Keller Foundation

The partnership “Living with Assistance” is delighted to report the award of a large grant from the Basic Needs Giving Partnership supported by the U.S. Oil Open Fund for Basic Needs within the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region, and the J.J. Keller Foundation, Inc.

“Living with Assistance” is a three year collaborative project between Bethany Home, Clarity Care-Oshkosh, the American Red Cross - Outagamie Chapter, and Fox Valley Lutheran Homes. The purpose of the joint effort is to develop a more efficient system to recognize and support low-income elderly and disabled individuals in the Fox Cities area, allowing them to live independently with some assistance.   Bethany Home continues in its second year supervision of the Fox Valley Lutheran Homes Community Care team, and experience in developing such services that produce favorable outcomes of improved quality of life for those it serves.

The total grant of $283,500 will be dispersed among the “Living with Assistance” partners over a three year period. The gift represents a donation of $141,750 from the U.S. Oil Open Fund for Basic Needs, and $141,750 in matching funds from the J. J. Keller Foundation, Inc.  Together, these two generous organizations have formed the Basic Needs Giving Partnership, a fund to address the root causes of poverty. To date, they have awarded over $655,000 in grant requests in our communities through the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region.

The “Living With Assistance” partners are grateful for the opportunity to serve the needs of our community by combining our efforts and uniting our individual programs:

  • Bethany Home will use its portion toward “Community Care” working together with congregations, the Aging and Disability Resource Centers and other providers of services to adults 50 years and older, or who are disabled, for the purposes of helping them maintain independence or living with assistance in the community.  The organizational and program efficiencies and new services will also give direction in duplicating efforts in the Bethany additional service areas of Waupaca, Waushara and Portage Counties.
  • Clarity Care will use its portion of the grant money for Help At Home, a charitable cost-sharing program that offers care to elderly and disabled individuals in their own homes, allowing them to remain living independently as long as possible.
  • The American Red Cross - Outagamie Chapter will use its portion for the Shopping and Errand Program providing grocery shopping, prescription pick-up, banking, and other personalized errands to Outagamie County residents who are at least 60 years old, homebound, and/or disabled.
  • Fox Valley Lutheran Homes with use its portion toward “Faith In Action”, a program which utilizes volunteers to make available services such as transportation, shopping, friendly visits, yard work, light housework, meals and more to elderly and disabled members of Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, their churches and communities. They also have nurses who provide programs and blood pressure clinics in specified locations.

Over the next three years the four Living With Assistance organizations will report on a regular basis to the Basic Needs Giving Partnership. They look forward to detailing the successes of this collaborative effort to assist the elderly and disabled individuals in maintaining their independence.
